About this book

Emily Byrd Starr, a dreamy, imaginative girl who wants to be a writer, is orphaned when her beloved father dies and is taken in by her proud, stern aunts, Elizabeth and Laura Murray, at the old family farm of New Moon on Prince Edward Island. There she makes friends with wild Ilse, the artist Teddy and the farm boy Perry, writes letters to her dead father in secret, and knows strange moments she calls 'the flash', glimpses of a beauty beyond everyday things.

Context and significance

L. M. Montgomery published the novel in 1923, and she said Emily was more like herself than Anne was. It entered the public domain in the United States in 2019. Read Anne of Green Gables.
