この本について

This collection contains Claude McKay's poems of the Harlem streets and of his lost Jamaican home: 'The Harlem Dancer', 'The Tropics in New York', with its memories of fruits that bring tears to his eyes, poems of love and loneliness, and fierce sonnets against racism and lynching, such as 'America' and 'If We Must Die', written in 1919 after the anti-Black riots of the 'Red Summer': 'If we must die, O let us nobly die'.

背景と意義

McKay (1889–1948), born in Jamaica, published the book in 1922 with an introduction by Max Eastman, and it is often seen as one of the works that began the Harlem Renaissance. Read Langston Hughes's The Weary Blues and Jean Toomer's Cane.
