About this book

What is Sufism? In this short, clear book, Reynold Nicholson explains the inner, mystical side of Islam: the path of repentance, poverty and trust in God, the stations and states of the soul, the guidance of the shaikh, illumination and ecstasy, divine love, knowledge of God, and fana, the passing away of the self in God. He illustrates each idea with sayings and stories of the great Sufis, from Rabi'a al-Adawiyya, al-Junayd and Abu Yazid al-Bistami to al-Hallaj, al-Ghazali, Ibn Arabi and Jalal al-Din Rumi.

Context and significance

Nicholson, who later translated the whole of Rumi's Masnavi into English, published the book in 1914, and it remains a learned and sympathetic introduction. Read The Confessions of Al Ghazzali, Rumi's Mesnevi and Nicholson's A Literary History of the Arabs.
