About this book

Valancy Stirling is twenty-nine, unmarried and crushed by a large, petty family in a small Ontario town, where her only escape is a daydream of a blue castle in Spain. Then a doctor's letter tells her she has a heart condition and perhaps a year to live, and Valancy decides to stop being afraid: she speaks her mind at a family dinner, goes to nurse a dying girl the town has shunned, and proposes to the most disreputable man in the district.

Context and significance

Published in 1926, The Blue Castle is L. M. Montgomery's only novel for adults set outside Prince Edward Island, and it has a devoted following. Montgomery (1874–1942), the author of Anne of Green Gables, filled it with the lakes and forests of Muskoka and with her own sharp humour about family life.
