About this book

A doctor tells Lord Peter Wimsey and his friend Inspector Parker about an elderly patient of his who was dying slowly of cancer but died suddenly, years before he expected, just when a change in the law might have affected who would inherit her money. There was no sign of poison and no apparent motive, and his suspicions ruined his practice. Wimsey decides to investigate a murder that may never have happened, helped by his inquisitive agent Miss Climpson, who is perfectly placed to gather gossip in a quiet country town.

Context and significance

Dorothy L. Sayers (1893–1957) published the novel in 1927, the third Lord Peter Wimsey mystery, and it is admired for its clever plot and its sharp picture of English society after the First World War; in the United States it was also published as The Dawson Pedigree. The first Wimsey novels are Whose Body? and Clouds of Witness.
