About this book

A stranger staggers into Hercule Poirot's flat, covered in dust and close to death, and can only repeat the words 'the Big Four' and the number four before he dies. Poirot and his friend Hastings discover that the Big Four is an international criminal organisation, led by a Chinese mastermind and including an American millionaire, a French woman scientist and a deadly, unknown 'destroyer', which plans to seize control of the world. The chase leads through murders and traps from London to the Italian mountains.

Context and significance

Agatha Christie put the book together in 1927 from linked short stories, at a difficult time in her life, and it is an unusual Poirot adventure, closer to a spy thriller; its Chinese villain reflects the stereotypes of its time. Read The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.
