About this book

A geologist from Miskatonic University tells why he is begging the world not to send another expedition to Antarctica. His team, flying over unexplored mountains higher than the Himalayas, discovered the ruins of a colossal city built long before humanity by star-born beings, and learned from its carvings the history of the Earth, and of the things that had destroyed its makers.

Context and significance

Lovecraft wrote this short novel in 1931, but it was rejected and only appeared in 1936 in a science fiction magazine. Its mix of scientific detail and cosmic dread makes it one of his most admired works, an influence on later science fiction and horror films. Begin with The Call of Cthulhu.
