About this book

Grettir Asmundarson is the strongest man in Iceland and the unluckiest: proud, quarrelsome and brave, he wrestles with the walking dead and destroys a monstrous ghost named Glam, whose curse leaves him afraid of the dark for the rest of his life, and he is outlawed for deaths he never intended. For nearly twenty years he survives as an outlaw in the wilderness, until he takes refuge with his brother Illugi on the rocky island of Drangey.

Context and significance

Written down in Iceland in the early fourteenth century about a real man who died around 1031, Grettir's saga is one of the greatest of the Icelandic family sagas, and some of its episodes echo Beowulf. It is full of dark humour, ghosts and fate. Then turn to The Nibelungenlied.
