About this book

One night Squire Allworthy, the most generous man in Somerset, finds a baby boy in his own bed and decides to raise him. Tom Jones grows up warm-hearted, handsome and constantly in trouble, in love with Sophia Western, the daughter of a hard-drinking neighbour, while Allworthy's sly nephew Blifil plots against him. Thrown out of the house, Tom takes to the road, and his adventures in inns and in London lead to an unexpected discovery about his birth.

Context and significance

Henry Fielding (1707–1754) was a successful playwright until censorship closed the theatres to him, and then a magistrate who helped found London's first organised police force, the Bow Street Runners. Published in 1749, Tom Jones is one of the founding comic novels in English, and each of its eighteen books opens with a witty essay addressed directly to the reader.
