Sobre este libro

Elmer Gantry, a loud, handsome, hard-drinking college football player with no real faith, drifts into the ministry because he enjoys an audience. He becomes a travelling evangelist alongside the passionate revivalist Sharon Falconer, then a Methodist preacher who climbs the ladder of success with sensational sermons and campaigns against vice, while secretly drinking, chasing women and betraying everyone who trusts him.

Contexto e importancia

Sinclair Lewis published the novel in 1927, and its savage portrait of religious hypocrisy caused an uproar; it was banned in several American cities and denounced from pulpits. The 1960 film won Burt Lancaster an Oscar. Read also Arrowsmith and Babbitt.
