About this book

A young man touring New England to study its old buildings and his own ancestry takes a cheap bus through Innsmouth, a decaying seaport on the Massachusetts coast that the neighbouring towns avoid. Its people have a strange 'Innsmouth look', with bulging, unblinking eyes and rough skin, and an old drunkard tells him the town's secret: a sea captain's dealings in the South Seas with creatures from the deep, and a pact that has changed the town for generations. Trapped overnight in a crumbling hotel, the narrator must run for his life.

Context and significance

H. P. Lovecraft wrote the story in 1931, and it appeared as a small book in 1936, the only one of his books published in his lifetime. One of his most popular tales, it mixes horror with a chase thriller and ends with a twist about the narrator himself. Readers who enjoy it often go on to The Call of Cthulhu and At the Mountains of Madness.
