About this book

Young Charles Marlow is painfully shy with well-bred ladies but bold with barmaids and servants. Sent to meet Kate Hardcastle, the girl his father hopes he will marry, he is tricked by her mischievous half-brother Tony Lumpkin into believing that the Hardcastles' country house is an inn, and he treats her father like an innkeeper. When Kate realises this she 'stoops to conquer', pretending to be a barmaid to win him, in one long night of mistakes.

Context and significance

Oliver Goldsmith wrote the comedy in 1773 as a reply to the sentimental comedies then in fashion, and it has been performed ever since. He is said to have based the central mistake on an adventure of his own youth, when he was directed to a private house as if it were an inn. Readers who enjoy it often go on to his The Vicar of Wakefield.
