Penrod Schofield, an imaginative, mischievous eleven-year-old boy in a Midwestern town, is forced to play the Child Sir Lancelot in a school pageant in a costume made from his sister's stockings, and takes his revenge. He dreams of being a famous outlaw, runs a show in his barn with his friend Sam and two brothers from the neighbourhood, fights a bully, and wages a constant war with grown-ups, dancing school and the girl next door.
Booth Tarkington published the comic stories in 1914, and they were among the most popular books about American boyhood, though they contain racial attitudes of their time. Read Tarkington's The Magnificent Ambersons, and compare Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
