About this book

The King James Version, also called the Authorized Version, is the English translation of the Bible made by some fifty scholars at the command of King James I and published in 1611. It contains the books of the Old Testament, from the creation in Genesis, the stories of Abraham, Joseph, Moses, David and Solomon, the Psalms and the prophets, and the New Testament, with the four Gospels of the life of Jesus, the Acts of the Apostles, the letters of Paul and the Book of Revelation. Many of its figures, Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses and Mary among them, are also honoured in the Qur'an.

Context and significance

Its translators built on the earlier work of William Tyndale, and its rhythmic prose shaped the English language for centuries; phrases such as 'the salt of the earth', 'a labour of love' and 'the powers that be' come from it. Writers from Bunyan and Milton to Lincoln drew on it; see The Pilgrim's Progress and Paradise Lost.
