About this book

What did the ancient Egyptians believe happened after death? In this short guide, E. A. Wallis Budge explains the great collection of spells, hymns and prayers that scribes wrote on tomb walls, coffins and papyrus rolls to help the dead on their journey: how the body was preserved, the role of Thoth, the god of wisdom, and of Osiris, king and judge of the underworld, the weighing of the heart in the Hall of Judgement, and the kingdom of the blessed dead, ending with a short description of the chapters themselves.

Context and significance

Budge (1857–1934) was keeper of Egyptian antiquities at the British Museum, home of the famous Papyrus of Ani. He explains that the name 'Book of the Dead' comes from the Egyptian tomb robbers, who called any papyrus found with a mummy 'Kitab al-Mayyit', 'the dead man's book'; the Egyptians' own title meant 'Coming Forth by Day'. Compare the Indian Upanishads.
