About this book

Joseph Jacobs set out to do for English folk tales what the Brothers Grimm had done for German ones, and this collection gathers forty-three of them, told in plain, lively language for children: Jack and the Beanstalk, The Story of the Three Little Pigs, The Three Bears, Henny-Penny, Dick Whittington and his cat, and Jack the Giant-Killer, together with less familiar tales such as Tom Tit Tot, an English cousin of Rumpelstiltskin, Molly Whuppie, who outwits a giant, and the eerie Mr Fox.

Context and significance

Jacobs (1854–1916), a folklorist and historian born in Australia, published the book in 1890 with pictures by John D. Batten and notes on the sources of each tale for adult readers. Many of these stories are still the first that English-speaking children hear. Compare Grimms' Fairy Tales.
