About this book

Mr Satterthwaite is an elderly, wealthy man who has always watched life from the sidelines. At a country house party on New Year's Eve, a stranger named Mr Harley Quin appears at the door, and with a few quiet questions helps the guests see the truth about a death that happened years before. In twelve stories Mr Quin appears and vanishes like a figure from a harlequinade, and Mr Satterthwaite becomes his partner.

Context and significance

Published in 1930, these stories are unlike Agatha Christie's other mysteries: romantic, a little supernatural and often sad, more about love and fate than about clues. Christie said they were among her favourites. They entered the public domain in the United States in 2026. For Poirot, start with The Mysterious Affair at Styles.
