About this book

Rebecca Randall, ten years old, the second of seven children on a poor farm, is sent to live with her two aunts in the village of Riverboro in Maine so that she can get an education. She arrives on the stagecoach talking non-stop and making up poems, to the delight of the driver and the dismay of her stern aunt Miranda, while gentle aunt Jane softens the strict household. As Rebecca grows up, her imagination, warmth and courage win over the village, a kindly young businessman she calls 'Mr Aladdin', her teachers at the academy and, at last, Miranda herself.

Context and significance

Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856–1923), who founded the first free kindergarten in San Francisco, published the novel in 1903, and it was an immediate best seller. Rebecca is a forerunner of Anne Shirley in Anne of Green Gables, and Pollyanna follows her in Pollyanna.
