About this book
The first of Andrew Lang's famous coloured fairy books gathers thirty-seven fairy tales from around the world: from Perrault and the Brothers Grimm come Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, the Sleeping Beauty, Rumpelstiltskin and Hansel and Grettel; from Norway, East of the Sun and West of the Moon; from the Arabian Nights, Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp; and from other lands Jack the Giant-Killer, Beauty and the Beast and many more.
Context and significance
Lang (1844–1912), a Scottish scholar and folklorist, published the book in 1889, and its success led to eleven more volumes, each named after a colour, which brought the world's fairy tales to generations of English-speaking children. Read Lang's The Arabian Nights Entertainments.
