About this book

The second of Andrew Lang's coloured fairy books gathers thirty-seven tales from many lands: from Norway, Soria Moria Castle and The Master Thief; from France, The Twelve Dancing Princesses; from the Grimms, Rapunzel and Snow-White and Rose-Red; from England, Jack and the Beanstalk; from the Norse sagas, the story of Sigurd and the dragon; and many more.

Context and significance

Andrew Lang published the book in 1890, a year after The Blue Fairy Book, and his series did much to make the world's fairy tales known to English-speaking children; much of the translating and retelling was done by his wife, Leonora Blanche Alleyne, and other collaborators. Read his Arabian Nights Entertainments.
