About this book

In the New York high society of the 1870s, where every gesture is governed by rules, Newland Archer is about to marry the lovely and conventional May Welland. Then May's cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, returns from Europe after leaving her husband, and her independence and honesty awaken in Newland a longing for a freer life, just as his world closes ranks to keep everyone in their places.

Context and significance

Edith Wharton (1862–1937), who was born into that very society, published the novel in 1920 and became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Its final scene in Paris is one of the most quietly devastating in American literature. Worth reading alongside it: her Ethan Frome and The House of Mirth.
