About this book

In Iceland around the year 1000, Njal Thorgeirsson, a wise and peaceable farmer and the greatest lawyer in the land, and his friend Gunnar of Hlidarend, a heroic warrior, try to keep the peace in a society without kings, where honour demands revenge. A quarrel between their wives begins a chain of killings that runs for decades, through Gunnar's last stand in his house and the conversion of Iceland to Christianity, until Njal's enemies burn him and his family in their home.

Context and significance

Njal's Saga, written in the late thirteenth century, is the longest and greatest of the Icelandic family sagas. This translation, of 1861, is by George Webbe Dasent. Compare Grettir's Saga and Heimskringla.
