About this book

Two travellers fishing in a remote corner of the west of Ireland find a ruined house on the edge of a chasm, and in the ruins a manuscript. It tells how its author, a recluse living there with his sister and his dog, was besieged by pig-like creatures that climbed from the pit, and how he was carried in visions to a plain surrounded by mountains, and then far into the future to watch the death of the Sun.

Context and significance

William Hope Hodgson (1877–1918) ran away to sea at thirteen, later became a writer of horror and sea stories, and was killed in the First World War. Published in 1908, The House on the Borderland mixes a siege story with vast cosmic visions, and Lovecraft admired it greatly; see At the Mountains of Madness.
