À propos de l’auteur

Badi al-Zaman al-Hamadhani (969–1007), the Wonder of the Age, was born in Hamadan and became famous for his memory and his gift for improvisation, winning a celebrated contest of eloquence against the older scholar al-Khwarizmi. He died in Herat at about forty.

He invented the maqama, a short story in rhymed prose in which the narrator Isa ibn Hisham keeps meeting the brilliant trickster Abu al-Fath al-Iskandari. The form was perfected by al-Hariri, and centuries later al-Muwaylihi borrowed his narrator's name for Hadith Isa ibn Hisham.
