After the death of his only son, the old hunter Allan Quatermain cannot bear life in England and sets out again for Africa with his friends Sir Henry Curtis and Captain Good, and the great Zulu warrior Umslopogaas with his battle-axe. They are searching for a rumoured lost civilisation beyond the mountains, and they find Zu-Vendis, a hidden kingdom ruled by two rival queen sisters, whose jealousy leads to civil war.

背景と意義

H. Rider Haggard published this sequel to King Solomon's Mines, also in this library, in 1887, and it is the story of Quatermain's last adventure; like its predecessor, it carries the imperial attitudes of its age. John Nicholson reads it alone, in about thirteen hours.
