Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever and rich, has lived nearly twenty-one years in the village of Highbury with very little to distress her, and she amuses herself by arranging other people's lives. She takes up the sweet, uncertain Harriet Smith and tries to marry her above her station, misreads the attentions of the vicar, Mr Elton, flirts with the charming Frank Churchill and envies the accomplished Jane Fairfax, while her old friend Mr Knightley warns her again and again that she is wrong. The comedy lies in how slowly she sees what the reader has begun to suspect.
