关于本书

In winter Holland, when the canals freeze, Hans Brinker and his sister Gretel, poor children whose father was injured on the dikes and lost his memory, dream of winning the silver skates in a great race. While Hans works to find a doctor who might cure his father, a group of boys skate from town to town across the country, and the book shows Dutch life, cities and history along the way, including the story of the boy who saved Haarlem with his finger in the dike.

背景与意义

Mary Mapes Dodge, an American who had never been to Holland, published the book in 1865 after much reading, and it became one of the best-selling children's books of its century. Mark F. Smith reads it alone, in about ten hours.
