Sobre el libro

In 1672 the city of Haarlem offers a hundred thousand guilders to whoever grows the first black tulip. Cornelius van Baerle, a gentle, wealthy young man who cares only for his flowers, is close to success when he is caught up in the murder of his godfather, the statesman Cornelius de Witt, by a mob, and thrown into prison by the plotting of his jealous neighbour. Through the bars he falls in love with Rosa, the jailer's daughter, who must save both him and the precious bulbs.

Contexto e importancia

Alexandre Dumas published the novel in 1850; it is shorter and gentler than his musketeer books, a love story set in Dutch history. Gail Timmerman Vaughan reads it alone, in about seven and a half hours.
