About this book

On an island off the west coast of Ireland, old Maurya has lost her husband, his father and four of her sons to the sea. Now her daughters wait for news of the fifth son, Michael, missing at sea, while her last son, Bartley, insists on taking horses across to the fair on the mainland though a storm is coming. In one act of spare, rhythmic prose, the play moves towards its quiet, devastating end.

Context and significance

John Millington Synge based the play, first performed in 1904, on what he saw on the Aran Islands, and it is often called the finest one-act tragedy in English; Ralph Vaughan Williams set it as an opera. Read Synge's The Playboy of the Western World.
