About this book

Tamburlaine, a Scythian shepherd of boundless ambition, rises by force and charm to conquer the kingdoms of Asia: he wins over the Persian commander sent against him, overthrows the Persian king, defeats the Turkish emperor Bajazeth and carries him about in a cage, and takes as his bride Zenocrate, daughter of the Sultan of Egypt, whose city of Damascus he besieges. In thundering blank verse he declares that nothing can limit a man who aspires to 'the sweet fruition of an earthly crown'.

Context and significance

Christopher Marlowe wrote the play around 1587, and its 'mighty line' transformed English drama and prepared the way for Shakespeare. It is loosely based on the real Turkic conqueror Timur (1336–1405), who defeated the Ottoman sultan Bayezid I near Ankara in 1402. This edition was edited by Alexander Dyce. Read Marlowe's Doctor Faustus.
