About this book

In four books of memories, Xenophon defends his teacher Socrates against the charges of impiety and corrupting the young for which he was executed in 399 BC, by showing him in daily conversation with friends, generals, artists and young men: on piety, friendship, self-control, the duty of sons to their mothers, the art of command, and the choice of Heracles between Virtue and Vice. His Socrates is practical and kindly, a moral adviser rather than the subtle philosopher of Plato.

Context and significance

Xenophon (about 430–354 BC), the soldier and writer who led the retreat described in his Anabasis, wrote the book years after Socrates' death. This translation is by Henry Graham Dakyns. Compare Plato's Apology.
