About this book

One evening a frightened young stranger, Christy Mahon, stumbles into a remote pub on the wild coast of County Mayo and confesses that he has killed his father with a blow of a spade. Instead of handing him over, the villagers admire him as a hero, the publican's spirited daughter Pegeen Mike falls in love with him, and the Widow Quin competes for him, until his father, bandaged but very much alive, walks in at the door.

Context and significance

John Millington Synge (1871–1909) wrote the comedy in the rich, poetic English spoken in the west of Ireland, which he had studied on the Aran Islands. When it opened at Dublin's Abbey Theatre in 1907, riots broke out among nationalists who felt it insulted the Irish people. From here, try his short tragedy Riders to the Sea.
