About this book

In the title story, Laura Sheridan, the daughter of a comfortable family in New Zealand, is helping her mother prepare a grand garden party when news comes that a young carter who lived in the poor cottages below has been killed in an accident. She wants to stop the party; her family will not, and afterwards she is sent down with a basket of leftovers to the dead man's house. The collection also includes 'The Daughters of the Late Colonel', 'Her First Ball', 'The Voyage' and 'Miss Brill'.

Context and significance

Katherine Mansfield (1888–1923), born in New Zealand, published the book in 1922, the year before she died of tuberculosis at thirty-four. Her delicate, impressionistic stories changed the modern short story. Compare Chekhov's The Darling; she admired him deeply.
