About this book

Magdalen and Norah Vanstone grow up happily in a comfortable country house, until their parents die within days of each other and the sisters discover that their parents were not legally married when they were born. By the harsh law of the time they are 'nobody's children', with no name and no claim on their father's fortune, which passes to a hard-hearted uncle. Norah accepts her fate, but the spirited Magdalen, a gifted actress, sets out to win the money back by disguise and deception.

Context and significance

Wilkie Collins published the novel in 1862, between The Woman in White and The Moonstone, as an attack on the law's treatment of children born outside marriage. Captain Wragge, the cheerful swindler who helps Magdalen, is one of his best comic creations.
