About this book

Darsie Latimer, a young man of mysterious birth, and his friend Alan Fairford, an Edinburgh law student, write letters to each other until Darsie disappears near the Solway Firth on the border of Scotland and England. Alan follows him and finds that he has been kidnapped by his uncle, Hugh Redgauntlet, a fanatical Jacobite who is plotting, around 1765, one last rising for Prince Charles Edward Stuart, long after the cause was lost.

Context and significance

Walter Scott published the novel in 1824, his last great novel about the Jacobites. It contains 'Wandering Willie's Tale', a story told by a blind fiddler about a journey to Hell to recover a receipt from a dead laird, which is often called one of the finest short stories in English. Read Scott's Waverley and Guy Mannering.
