About this book

At the court of Spain, after a war with Portugal, the young courtier Horatio, son of the old marshal Hieronimo, is murdered in a garden by his rivals in love and hanged from a tree, where his father finds him. Unable to obtain justice from the king, Hieronimo, half mad with grief, plans his revenge, which he carries out through a play performed before the whole court. The story is watched throughout by the ghost of a dead soldier and the spirit of Revenge.

Context and significance

Thomas Kyd (1558–1594) wrote the tragedy in the late 1580s, and it was one of the most popular plays of the Elizabethan stage, creating the revenge tragedy and the play within a play that Hamlet would make immortal. Compare Marlowe's Tamburlaine.
