About this book

This volume contains Sophocles' three Theban plays. In Oedipus the King, the ruler of Thebes sets out to find the murderer whose crime has brought plague on his city, and step by step discovers that he himself killed his father and married his mother, as an oracle foretold. In Oedipus at Colonus, the blind old exile, led by his daughter Antigone, finds a place to die near Athens. In Antigone, his daughter defies King Creon to bury her brother, choosing the law of the gods over the law of the state.

Context and significance

Sophocles (about 496–406 BC) wrote more than a hundred plays for the festivals of Athens, of which only seven survive complete. Aristotle, in his Poetics, treated Oedipus the King as the model of tragedy, and Freud took its name for his famous complex. It pairs well with Homer's Iliad.
