About this book

In a New England town stands an old house with seven gables, built by Colonel Pyncheon on land he took from Matthew Maule, a poor man he helped send to the gallows as a wizard. Maule's dying curse seems to hang over the family for two centuries. Now the house shelters the proud, impoverished Hepzibah Pyncheon, who must open a little cent-shop to survive, her broken brother Clifford, just released after a long imprisonment, and a bright young cousin, Phoebe, while their powerful relative Judge Pyncheon schemes in the background.

Context and significance

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804–1864) published the novel in 1851, a year after The Scarlet Letter. His own ancestor John Hathorne was a judge at the Salem witch trials, so the theme of inherited guilt was personal to him. The old house in Salem associated with the book can still be visited.
