Lemuel Gulliver, a ship's surgeon, makes four voyages and is cast up each time in a stranger country. In Lilliput he is a giant among people six inches tall who go to war over which end of an egg to break; in Brobdingnag he is a plaything for giants, whose king is appalled by his account of England; then comes the flying island of Laputa with its absent-minded scientists, and finally the land of the Houyhnhnms, wise and rational horses, beside whom the human Yahoos are filthy brutes. Each voyage turns the satire more sharply against human pride.
Jonathan Swift, dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, published the book in 1726 as though it were a genuine travel account, and it has been read ever since both as a children's adventure and as one of the fiercest satires in English. Lizzie Driver reads it alone, in about eleven hours.
