Sobre el libro

In a provincial English town around 1830, the idealistic Dorothea Brooke marries the dry old scholar Mr Casaubon in the hope of serving a great work and finds herself in a stifling marriage, while the ambitious young doctor Tertius Lydgate is drawn into debt by his beautiful, selfish wife Rosamond. Around them a whole community, from the banker Bulstrode with a hidden past to the honest Garth family, is shown with sympathy and wit, at a moment of political and social change.

Contexto e importancia

George Eliot, the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, published the novel in parts in 1871 and 1872, and many critics count it among the greatest novels in English. Margaret Espaillat reads the whole of it alone, about thirty-five hours.
