À propos du livre

Call me Ishmael, the narrator begins, and he tells how he signed on to the whaling ship Pequod out of Nantucket with his friend Queequeg, a harpooner from the South Seas. At sea the captain, Ahab, reveals that the voyage has a single purpose: to hunt down the white whale that took his leg. Between the chase and the final three-day battle, Melville fills the book with everything about whales and whaling, from anatomy to the boiling of blubber, and with the sermons, songs and soliloquies of a crew bound to one man's revenge.

Contexte et portée

Herman Melville, who had sailed on a whaler himself, published the novel in 1851; it sold poorly in his lifetime and is now counted among the greatest American books. Stewart Wills reads the whole of it alone, nearly twenty-five hours.
