About this book

Writing as Geoffrey Crayon, an American traveller in England, Washington Irving collects his impressions and stories: the voyage across the Atlantic, the quiet English countryside and its customs, Westminster Abbey, Shakespeare's Stratford, old country inns and a series of essays on an English Christmas, together with tales of ghosts and legends. Two of the stories, set among the Dutch settlers of the Hudson Valley, became the first classics of American fiction: 'Rip Van Winkle', who sleeps for twenty years, and 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow', with its Headless Horseman.

Context and significance

Irving published the book in parts in 1819 and 1820, and it was the first American book to win wide success in Britain; its Christmas essays influenced Dickens's A Christmas Carol. Its two famous tales also have their own pages: Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
