About this book

Professor Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen, known as the Thinking Machine for his pure logic, argues that a clever mind can escape from any prison. To prove it, he has himself locked in a cell on death row for one week, with only his clothes, some tooth powder, two banknotes and his shoes polished. Day by day, small things begin to happen that the guards cannot explain.

Context and significance

Jacques Futrelle (1875–1912) was an American journalist whose detective stories were hugely popular, and this one, published in 1905, is the most famous of them, a classic puzzle that still delights readers of mysteries. Futrelle died in the sinking of the Titanic, after making sure his wife got into a lifeboat. Readers who enjoy it should try The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
