About this book

A respectable architect wakes up to find a dead man in his bath, wearing nothing but a pair of gold pince-nez. On the same night a famous financier disappears from his London home. Lord Peter Wimsey, a witty aristocrat who collects rare books and solves crimes for pleasure, takes up both cases with the help of his loyal manservant Bunter and his friend Inspector Parker.

Context and significance

Published in 1923, this was the first of Dorothy L. Sayers's Wimsey novels, and beneath the comedy Lord Peter carries the shell shock of the war. Sayers (1893–1957) was among the first women to receive an Oxford degree, worked in advertising, helped found the Detection Club and later translated Dante's Divine Comedy. For another great detective, see Father Brown.
