About this book

Anne Beddingfeld, a young woman tired of a quiet life, is on a London Underground platform when a man falls onto the line and dies. A doctor examines him and hurries away, dropping a scrap of paper with a mysterious message. Following the clue, Anne spends her small inheritance on a passage to South Africa, and finds herself caught up in stolen diamonds, murder and a criminal mastermind known only as the Colonel.

Context and significance

Published in 1924, the novel draws on Agatha Christie's own voyage around the British Empire in 1922. It is a light-hearted adventure rather than a classic puzzle, with a brave, funny heroine and chapters from the comic diary of Sir Eustace Pedler, a self-satisfied Member of Parliament. Readers who enjoy it often go on to Poirot Investigates.
