About this book

In the quiet English village of King's Abbot, the wealthy widower Roger Ackroyd is found stabbed in his study, the night after the death of the woman he hoped to marry. The village doctor, James Sheppard, tells the story, and his new neighbour, a small foreigner who has retired to grow vegetable marrows, turns out to be the detective Hercule Poirot.

Context and significance

Published in 1926, the novel contains one of the most famous twists in the history of crime fiction, and in 2013 the British Crime Writers' Association voted it the best crime novel ever written; avoid reading anything about it before you finish. Agatha Christie (1890–1976), the best-selling novelist of all time, introduced Poirot in The Mysterious Affair at Styles.
