Sobre el libro

Oliver Twist, born in a workhouse and raised on gruel, is sent off as an apprentice after he dares to ask for more, and runs away to London, where the Artful Dodger brings him to Fagin, who trains boys to pick pockets. Taken in by the kindly Mr Brownlow, Oliver is dragged back into the gang by Bill Sikes and Nancy, whose attempt to save him ends in one of the most violent scenes in Dickens. A secret about Oliver's birth, pursued by the sinister Monks, ties the story together.

Contexto e importancia

Dickens published the novel in monthly parts from 1837 to 1839, and its attack on the workhouse system made it a cause as well as a story; its portrait of Fagin draws on the antisemitic stereotypes of its day. Twenty-five LibriVox volunteers read it in about seventeen hours.
