Sobre el libro

Pip, an orphan raised by his sister and her husband, the kind blacksmith Joe, helps an escaped convict on the marshes one Christmas Eve, and later is sent to play at the house of Miss Havisham, who sits in her rotting wedding dress with all the clocks stopped and teaches her ward Estella to break men's hearts. When a lawyer announces that Pip has great expectations from a secret benefactor, he goes to London to become a gentleman and learns to be ashamed of Joe, until the truth about his fortune turns his world upside down.

Contexto e importancia

Charles Dickens published the novel as a serial in 1860 and 1861, and it is the most tightly made of his books, full of comedy and remorse. Mark F. Smith reads it alone, in about twenty hours.
